The Menageriespecimens on file

Alien Vase

Celadon over a white stoneware. An ornate vase covered in hand sculpted mouths and eyes.

Mummy

Cream-bound stoneware with deep cobalt underglaze beneath the wrappings. Ready to prepare matcha.

The Brood

Celadon glaze over a brown stoneware body. Are those eyes above the fangs? Or are they eggs?

From the Lagoon

Obsidian with oil-slick green and blue highlights. Wide pale eyes and a row of cream teeth.

One creature at a time.

Mena (pronounced men-uh) is a ceramic artist working out of the San Francisco Bay Area. She arrived at clay by an indirect route: a stretch in software engineering, a hand-building class in 2023 , followed by a hand injury that made typing inadvisable, and a hand-building class in 2023. Crafts had been there since she was a child; knitting first, then sewing and quilting. But clay was the first medium where she felt she could play with and develop original ideas and art.

She makes mugs, plant pots, small sculptures, and more. Hand-built and wheel-thrown depending on what the piece is asking for. The first creature she made was a butter-yellow bowl ringed with teeth and upon its completion, something clicked and gave her a direction. She hopes the work sparks joy in your life, but most importantly she needed to get the monsters out of her head.
